Report on 2014 Blackwood Challenge & Flying Fish Teams Event

The annual Blackwood Challenge Regatta took place at Augusta over the 5/6th April weekend, with 3 GP14s from "Team Big Smoke" (Mounts Bay Yacht Club in Perth) competing against 2 from "Team Dunsborough Bay Yacht Club" for both the Flying Fish Teams Trophy and the individual competition for the prestigious Blackwood Challenge trophy. Great rivalry ensued, with young Morgan Flower (BlackAdder) ably crewed by his dad Steve with alternate assistance from Xavier Rhodes on the trapeze and Peter Hales (Aeolus) with daughter Sarah upholding the honour of DBYC very credibly.

Both Cocktail Cherry and Eshowe were sporting new crews for the Challenge and we are sure after the enjoyment of the weekend they are likely to become regulars.

Although "Team Big Smoke" creamed the pool, some of the races were close with great spinnaker work going on around the buoys, and mixed fortunes as a result. Incumbent La Rousse (Bruce Quail/Steve Heywood) retained the individual trophy followed by Cocktail Cherry (Louis Proksch/Corrie Schutte) and Eshowe (Ian Greenham/Sally Ward).

The weekend as usual was a great success, and Augusta Yacht Club are to be commended for the running of the whole event under the sponsorship of Augusta Bendigo Bank, and making it so enjoyable for everyone. Roll on next year!

Many thanks to Joan Embry of DBYC for assistance in penning this article
